The back wall of our classroom had started to fill up with drawings of the useless and important things in all our lives.

Emma had drawn an earring shaped like a musical note. ‘It’s a semi-quaver. My grandma gave me a pair, but I lost one. So now I can’t wear it.’

Mr Knight looked at the ceiling like he was trying to solve a tricky maths problem. ‘Have you thought about wearing earrings that don’t match?’

She looked at him like he’d asked her to gut a fish.

Deshan pinned up a picture of a fishing rod. ‘It’s too small and the reel doesn’t work anymore, but I caught my first fish with it at The Pocket.’

‘How big was the fish?’ Mr Knight’s moustache curled a bit.

‘This big,’ said Deshan, measuring the memory of the fish with his hands. The class erupted into whines of disbelief.

Other kids had sketched snow globes, animal statues or clothes they’d worn as babies. I still didn’t know what to draw. Whenever I thought of something important – bike, binoculars or bird guide – I couldn’t imagine how it could ever be useless.
